With the merger of Sam Schmidt Motorsports and McLaren for the 2020 IndyCar season, and also subsequent switch from Honda to Chevrolet power (because Honda refuses to deal with McLaren in any way after their F1 partnership fell apart and negative things said in public), Hinch, who is contracted with Honda as one of their public figures, finds himself without a ride.

Aww...he always seems like he is having fun.

He walked into my pub in StPete. I declared the Mayor of Hinchtown has arrived. He waved and fled...so I am worried I scared him when he likely just wanted a quiet beer.

I’ve come to the conclusion that SPM is a dysfunctional organization. W ith the McLaren merger, I feel like it’s only gotten more so. What they’ve done to Hinch is super shitty, but I can’t help but think he’ll be better off in the long term. I actually fear for the careers of Pato and Oliver.

I’ve heard rumblings that the McLaren deal might only be for a season or two, so SPM is making all these sweeping changes and severing loyal partnerships for what might only be a year or two deal... Doesn’t sound great at this juncture.

On the other hand, if this means we get Alonso for a season or two full time, I’ll be a pretty excited. IndyCar could use the injection of popularity from having a prominent F1 world champion coming to compete full time. That’s what IndyCar was before the split.

Thinking back to the 1993 Indy 500, I believe there was something like 4 F1 World Champions in the field. Fittipaldi, Andretti, Mansell (reigning champ at that point) and Piquet. Couple of those guys may have been a bit past their prime, but it still makes for a good story and prestige of having such big time names in the series.

I wouldn’t doubt if McLaren either goes their own way in a couple years, or simply buys out Schmidt and Peterson.  While I would love to have Fernando Alonso in the series full time, I honestly don’t think that will ever happen.  Best case scenario he shows up for Indy, and maybe another race or two.
